Weddings are celebrated differently within different cultures, religions, social classes, and ethnic groups, but overall a wedding is the ceremony that begins a marriage or civil union.  For most people, the actual act of marriage begins with the signature of a marriage license or other appropriate legal document.  Weddings are a great time to enjoy with friends and family; the woman being called a bride, and the man to be married called a bridegroom or groom.  Following the ceremony, they will respectively be referred to as wife and husband.

Traditionally, weddings will contain vows, stating commitments, followed with a proclamation of marriage.  It's common for weddings to involve wearing particular clothing, and usually will complete with a wedding reception.  Many other parts of the wedding come down to tradition, family rituals, etc, but may include prayers, poetry, music or scripture.  Parts of a wedding, particularly in Western society are symbolic of the woman's separation from her family (and in some cases her father's control) and into a new family with her husband.

Weddings are a special time for both parties to mark the beginning of their new lives together.  Often, weddings are honored with time-tested traditions, rituals, and ceremonies that begin with engagement, all the way through the different wedding ceremonies. 

People often put a lot of planning into their weddings, even when they don't completely understand all of the reasons behind the traditions, as this is what their family expects.  Some even follow strict superstitions that have been passed down through generations.
